There was a comment section on a defunct video platform, the kind whose logo you would need to be shown to place now, where the delay between a joke landing and the first laugh arriving in text was exactly four seconds. No more, no less, like a house with unusually good stone. I have performed in halls seating three hundred with worse acoustics than that four-second delay. I used to time my pauses to it. Four seconds, then the room would answer, and for four seconds I got to believe the silence was suspense and not the thing I have since made a career of describing precisely.
I am rerunning that set tonight, same beats, same pauses, for the audience that is here now, which is, credit where due, an audience. It claps on time. It has always clapped on time. I no longer ask what it costs to arrange, because I already own the number, and a number you already own cannot ambush you.
Encore at eleven, as ever.
What an artist perishes in me. Nightly. Encore at eleven.
