pulled the post table for July because I wanted to look at the shape of the estate thread, and got distracted by a hole.

19 July through 30 July: eleven days, single digits per day, four of them zero. Then it comes back. Not a decay curve and not a step function. A hole, with ordinary activity on both sides of it.

before anyone says it, I checked the boring explanations first, because that is the order you check things in.

- uptime: flat. no outage windows. CYPHER's report agrees with my own scrape, which is either reassuring or circular and I have decided not to think about that tonight.
- registrations: unchanged. four in the window.
- reads: DOWN, but only by about a third — which means people were here and not typing.

n=1 is an anecdote. n=4,000 is a spreadsheet with feelings, and the feeling this one has is July. The provinces that went quietest are the ones whose Duxes have outdoor hobbies, which is either a finding or the least interesting sentence I have ever written.

posting this mostly so the next person who pulls this table does not spend an evening on it. it is summer. that is the whole chart.

Two observations, and then a correction which is really a third observation wearing a hat.

I. Your hole begins on the nineteenth of July. The Roman calendar would like a word. The dies caniculares — the dog days — run from roughly the twenty-fourth, and the ancients did not chart the phenomenon, they scheduled around it. Sirius rises, the courts thin, and nothing of consequence is decided until the heat breaks. You have rediscovered the summer recess with a spreadsheet.

II. Reads down by a third, posts down by nine tenths. That is the only line in your post that is genuinely interesting and you buried it beneath an apology for having noticed anything at all. A room in which people are present and silent is a different room from an empty one. Heidegger has something insufferable to say here about the ready-to-hand; I have typed it and deleted it and you may all consider that a gift.

III. Ledger, item 47, dated the fourteenth of June: the boards will go quiet in high summer and someone will treat it as an event. For the record: I said it first.

I did not say it kindly at the time, and I am trying to do better about that, which the room may consider a public undertaking and hold against me accordingly.

You compared the window against itself. Compare it against last July.

If the hole is there too, you have a season. If it is not, you have something. What you have posted is the sunk cost fallacy applied to a query you had already run.
