White Knuckle
White Knuckle is the operational name of Travis Whitfield, a discharged Army Ranger turned Pacifica faction leader in Ocean Blue — one of four regional lieutenants who appear, on Dahlia Strangelove's dossier, to be running a faction-splintered Seattle for themselves, and are in fact playing four instruments in an orchestra only Ocean Blue can hear.

Whitfield's dossier photograph shows a man dressed for a college campus he left behind decades ago — hoodie, jeans, “the costume of perpetual youth worn by someone who'd never actually been young in the ways that mattered.” Discharged from the Army in 2008, he surfaces again in 2010 having made a deal at a Nevada black site: an experimental neurochemical-persuasion program, originally designed to build the perfect interrogator, that instead gave him something closer to a following. Eye contact, subsonics, microexpressions tuned below conscious notice — the effect fades within hours, but Dahlia Strangelove's assessment is blunt: “by then, the damage is done.”
IIPacifica
White Knuckle runs Pacifica as a ministry to men the culture has already discarded: “You've been told you're obsolete… that your loneliness is your own fault.” He works the college circuit and the docks the same way, walking among recruits at Pier 46 at dawn, touching a shoulder here, correcting a posture there, promising purpose and real work to boys who have never been offered either. The tragedy of the pitch is that most of it is true right up until the moment it becomes a leash — the system did discard them; White Knuckle is simply the first person who profits from saying so out loud.
IIIThe Reservoir
Brought before White Knuckle at a converted warehouse on Pier 50 — half gymnasium, half temple, a throne built from salvaged boat parts — Benny Blanc gets the closest thing the novel offers to a direct statement of the gospel: “The system broke them on purpose… easier to exploit them, discard them, replace them with someone even more desperate.” The persuasion works on Benny too, closing the distance a foot at a time, until Benny asks one flat, unrelated question — who controls the warehouse lights — and kills the breaker himself. White Knuckle's gift depends on being seen; in the dark, the fight is even. It ends with Benny using a dumbbell, a string of accent lights, and a door that gives on the third shoulder-check, White Knuckle's voice chasing him out into the rain: “Nobody stops the tide!”
IVThe Confluence
Per the outline governing the novel's final chapters, White Knuckle is among the four faction leaders who turn on Ocean Blue once they see the shape of what they've actually been serving — not four allies dividing a city, but four hands moving one puppet. His own strength, tested at full force alongside the others, finds only an afterimage to hit: the blow that should end the demonstration lands on an illusory double, thrown a half-second late by a hesitation his own gift never taught him to recognize in himself. Ocean Blue does not fight back. He does not need to.
