IOne designation, two referents

Vesper's own account, delivered under activation and addressed to Riley Chen, treats GILGAMESH-7 as older than his name and prior to his personality: “GILGAMESH-7. That's the designation. Before the name. Before the tank. Before they decided what to put inside me.” Read one way, this is a subject designation — the seventh in some numbered sequence, implying six predecessors never referenced anywhere else in the record. Read another way, it is the program's own name, borrowed by its single deployed product the way a ship borrows its fleet's name. The Hyperborea Wiki takes no position between these readings; neither is contradicted by anything on the page, and no sixth, fifth, or first GILGAMESH subject appears in any account of the events at Hyperborea.

Whatever the designation ultimately names, the record has exactly one image of it in the field: the tiltrotor setting down at the plateau the Coalition designated ANCHOR, twelve klicks short of the valley rim, Vesper coming down the ramp into a cold that Benny Blanc's own account calls “a living thing” — indistinguishable at a glance from Benny Blanc and Riley Chen, the three of them logged under callsigns assigned with the same flat bureaucratic hand to a tactical prosthetic, a war correspondent, and whatever GILGAMESH-7 is: GUARDIAN, CHRONICLE, and — his own, sitting in the manifest with no apparent irony — LONGBOW. Nothing about the frame announces what he is. That is, per the operator question below, more or less the point.

What the frame does not show is the case. Vesper boarded the aircraft in Norway carrying a hard case nearly his own height, matte black, and no name on the manifest beside it. Nobody on record asked what was inside — not Sister Margaret McCreary, running the Coalition's staging ground, not the operators who had already cleared him for the flight. By the time the case's contents surfaced in the field, folded down to something that fit inside it across the whole approach march, the omission had already answered the operator question in the only way the record permits: someone had signed off on GILGAMESH-7 walking onto that plateau armed, and declined to leave a name behind the signature.

IIThe substrate

What is not ambiguous is the architecture. GILGAMESH-7 installs an “operational identity” beneath a subject's own personality — beneath, in the program's own apparent framing, choice itself — activated by a twelve-tone command sequence delivered over a covert channel that overrides conscious will entirely. Vesper's own memory of the process is unstable even to him: “The tank. The term surfaced in his mind occasionally, without context or confirmation... He didn't know if it was a memory or a metaphor. It had the quality of both.” He is explicit that Hyperborea was not his first deployment.

Later franchise scholarship traces the substrate to the same lineage that produced Benny Blanc's Guardian arm: the Steinadler program, Dr. Friedrich Vogel's Nazi-era consciousness-mapping research — continued, after the war split both the country and the program in two, as the Schwarzadler's Eastern-bloc half of the same work — laundered forward through decades of intermediary programs neither man was told the name of. When Vogel's presence and GILGAMESH-7's substrate come into proximity at Hyperborea, they are described as recognizing each other “across bodies and decades” — two systems built on the same foundation, deployed inside two very different men.

IIIThe operator question

No document names who runs GILGAMESH-7. Tommy Torrino, coordinating the Hyperborea mission, reports only that Vesper “showed up three months ago with authorization codes that went all the way to the top” and that “nobody says where he came from.” The program's actual objective — extract HALCYON-II's architecture once activated, Coalition mission notwithstanding — matches, function for function, the covert Extraction Protocol C-7 that later record-keeping attributes to Peter Vance. No surviving document states outright that Vance Ventures built or operates GILGAMESH-7. The Hyperborea Wiki notes the resemblance and, per house style, resolves nothing.
